Andrew Davis was born in the year 1944 on the 2nd of February 1944. He died of Leukemia which he was diagnosed last year. During the course of his career, Davis served in a number of different capacities, including those of Chief Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Music Advisor to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
In 1975 he was given the position of Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, which he would continue to hold until 1988. In 1973 that Davis made his debut with the Glyndebourne Festival. In 1988, he was promoted to the position of Music Director at the festival, where he remained until his retirement. He remained employed by the company until the year 2000, when he passed away.
The news that Sir Andrew Davis has died has been brought to my attention presently. He was a very special conductor and a joy to work with, which is an opinion that I am certain I share with all of my coworkers at the British Broadcasting Corporation Singers. He was a joy to work with. During the time that he was in charge of conducting the final night of the BBC proms, my generation was able to develop through his leadership. This is the year that he delivered the speech before the audience. As a hero.
So very sad to hear Sir Andrew Davis has died. He was a very special conductor and a joy to work with – an opinion I know I share with all my @BBCSingers colleagues. My generation grew up with him conducting the Last night of @bbcproms. Here’s the year he sang the speech. Hero. pic.twitter.com/WdhVYnYnEX
